52 Weeks – 52 Cupcakes Challenge

Is it a coincidence I have begun a 52 cupcake challenge and there are 52 weeks in a year? Why no – so what may you ask is a 52 cupcake challenge?

#52cupcake is a challenge I have set as a goal for myself, as a baker and business owner. In early Spring 2012, I went on a vacation with my mum, and between exploration and delicious meals, I had time to read two great books by Jim Collins, Great by Choice and Good to Great. Both books I found very interesting, but especially Great by Choice. This book inspired me to think more critically about my business, and reflect.

Upon returning from my vacation in early May, I have been enthusiastic and full of momentum for my challenge: Create a new cupcake flavour – every week, for one year, ready for the weekly farmers’ markets.

I have been updating everyone on the new flavours weekly on my Facebook Page and Twitter – and commenting on the successes and creative process that makes a new cupcake spring from my kitchen on the regular!

I will log these new, innovative and always delicious cupcakes on my site – and soon will have a section under Cake and Icing Flavours that catalogs them. While some favourites may stick around for a few weeks, others will come as a glimpse just once – so it is always a good idea to try that one out when making your choice at the market!

Some flavours will be inspired with seasonal ingredients, for example fresh, local Ontario produce I can integrate into a cupcake – strawberries, peaches etc. Other cupcakes will come from other inspirations – but be sure that each week there will be something different, and perhaps one-of-a-kind to try.

I had hoped to blog about this before the start of the challenge (but figured baking them was my first priority) and as such have already been keeping up. A summery of the #52cupcake flavours to date:

May 12 – Tropical Sunrise – an inspiration from the sunny south, the cupcake that started the challenge!
May 19 – Margarita Lime – our original cocktail cupcake!
May 26 – Bubble Gum
June 2 – Pina Colada – our second fun cocktail cupcake!
June 9 – Fresh Strawberry – with Ontario strawberries!
June 16 – Peanut Butter Chocolate – a new flavour turned classic – now available weekly!
June 23 – bi-week – had two flavours July 7 – was at Oakville Ribfest and thus could not do a brand new flavour!
June 30 – Watermelon Wave
July 7 – Fresh Cherry Vanilla and Strawberry Daiquiri (our third cocktail cupcake!) – two cupcakes this week, to make up for the weekend of
July 14 – S’mores – will be around all summer long!
July 21 – Peach Mango Mocktail – with Ontario peaches!
July 28 – Cotton Candy
August 4 – bi-week – will have two flavours the week of August 11

August 11 – Olympic Canadian Maple AND Cherry Coke

August 18 – Chocolate Coconut

August 25 – RIBFEST WEEKEND! Caramel Toffee

September 1 – Neapolitan

September 8 – Apple Pie – first prize winner at the 170th Aberfoyle Fall Fair

September 15 – Tiger Tail

September 22 – Classic Carrot

September 29 – October 13 – bi-weeks – my wedding and honeymoon break! Don’t worry I’ll catch up!

October 20 – Ice Cream Sundae

October 27 – Bananarama

November 3 – Chocolate Banana

November 10 – Ferrero Nutella and Egg Nog & Cinnamon

November 17 – Black Forest

November 24 – Gingerbread Joy

December 1 – Candy Cane Sparkle

December 8 – Chocolate Peppermint

December 15 – Turtles (the seventh holiday flavour!)

December 22 – no new flavours this week – holiday baking for the market before Christmas!

December 29 – Don’t worry, they’ll be made up for 🙂

January 5 – Tiramisu

January 12 – Dark and Stormy

January 19 – Peachy Penguin

January 26 – bi-week – was away for my cousin’s wedding in Cuba!

February 2 РEspa̱ola

February 9 – Pink Velvet Twist & Chocolate Raspberry

February 16 – Chocaretto

February 22 – Popcorn Cupcake (in celebration of the Academy Awards!) & Doggie Cupcakes – baked with $2 from each going to the Guelph Humane Society

March 2 – Cookie Dough & Gluten Free Vegan Raspberry and Gluten Free Vegan PB & Jam

March 23 – Cream Egg, Mini Egg, Orange Conundrum – ya three flavours!

March 30 – Easter Weekend! Fresh Lemon

April 6 – Spring Wedding and Raspberry Cream – TWO new flavours!

April 13 – No new flavour! We had a major black out and power resumed around midnight before the market – had to postpone the newest flavour to the next weekend

April 20 – Maple Bacon and Gluten Free Vegan Maple

April 27 – April Showers

May 4 – Very Berry Cherry

May 11 – Hummingbird

May 18 – Will be the 50th cupcake flavour – finalizing the last few flavours soon!

May 25 – 52nd Flavour! Going to be a great end to this year’s challenge!  Aberfoyle Farmers’ Market Opening Day!

 

So as you can see, not only have I been busy baking up a storm in the kitchen – the storm has had lightening flashes of creativity – hopefully within all these flavours there are some that you’ve loved!
