Local Crowdfunding – great things happening in Guelph

Community support matters – especially when establishing a business or growing your fan base. When opening our flagship storefront for Sweet Temptations Cupcakery we turned to crowd funding to help us bridge the gap between what the banks would loan us, the government would loan us and what we had saved from our 3+ years at farmers’ markets, weddings and special events. Raising nearly $9000 helped us buy equipment and make hefty deposits like first and last month’s rent, hydro and gas utilities. Now spring nearly 3 years ahead, and we’ve been in touch with another young entrepreneur who is working to make his dream a reality.

Enter – Jorey.

I met Jorey a few years ago through a mutual friend Beth Timlin, who owns Grey Rock Clothing Co, Downtown Guelph. As a go getter with big personality it was nice to meet Jorey and find commonalities with him. When he approached me for input and support for his new idea, it was a no brainer. Check out his next leap forward here, with a guest blog by him. Thanks for taking time to read and for considering supporting his project.

Jorey Tessier ….

It was two months ago where I decided to venture off and finally start a crowdfunding campaign for my dream of launching my first children’s book in a series of nine.  I knew that the first person I had to talk to was Jakki.  You see, Jakki and I share something in common, we are both very driven and will do what it takes to achieve the end goal.  Jakki’s successful crowdfunding campaign allowed her to open up Sweet Temptations.  Her hard work and dedication has led her to be the successful and admirable woman I know her as today.

Jakki has done, and continues to do whatever it takes to make Sweet Temptations Cupcakery the well-known and absolutely delicious cupcakery in Guelph; which is exactly what I have been doing throughout the last year with the creation of my first Children’s book entitled “Dream BIG”. Sitting down with Jakki and getting her insight on the next steps to the making of “Dream BIG” can be summed up in 5 words “do things that scare you”.

It’s great to have goals and dreams, but it’s even better to have a game plan to be able to achieve those goals and dreams.  Yet if these dreams and goals don’t scare you, there’s a chance you already know how to achieve them, which means they could become a “back burner goal.” You know? Those goals you say “I know how to achieve them so it can wait a little”.  Releasing this campaign excites me and scares me all at once; which I’m sure Jakki felt the exact same way. There is a chance that it won’t go as planned, but on the flip side, it could go great.  Either or, there is an opportunity to learn and grow, see what works and see what doesn’t.  In the words of Jim Carrey “you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love”
