University Cupcake Connection

December and the next few months are an exciting time between us and the University of Guelph. We are collaborating in so many ways, and we couldn’t be happier! Having attended UoG for my undergraduate degree, I spent many years on campus as a student, and later as a Central Student Association (CSA) staff member. Many of our cupcake ‘cup’stomers are UoG students and staff – who enjoy weekly cupcakes at The Bullring or at the Guelph Farmers’ Market. As our business is growing, with our existing connections, we are surely to find new was to work together. The next few months are no exception! Here we showcase our recent and upcoming collaborative efforts with the University of Guelph, it’s campus and students. As a local small business operating in Guelph, opening our storefront in the next month literally ‘down the street’ from campus – we are so happy to share these many connections.

Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is an initiative the University of Guelph signed on to support as a response to the commercialization and consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. We will be cupcake vendors at the Giving Fair, hosted in the University Centre courtyard on Tuesday, December 3 from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Along with other philanthropic features that day, we will be selling our cupcakes and donating 30% of our sales to the Central Student Association (CSA) student Food Bank. We hope to sweeten the day of students, faculty and staff alike by encouraging them to indulge in a treat, while making a contribution to support this valuable service offered for students in need. We hope you will consider visiting us in the courtyard that day to pick up a cupcake or few to take home, and help us make a significant contribution to the Food Bank.

Student Artwork and Fine Arts Network – FAN

While my best grades in high school we not in art class, and having took Environmental Science at university, I respect and appreciate the talented youth we have in terms of the fine arts. For this reason we are pleased to provide an opportunity for aspiring student artists from the University of Guelph. We are creating a designated space to showcase their amazing artwork in our storefront. Not only will have an outlet to display their art, and take pride in that public display, we will be able to brighten up our space, making all our guests feel welcome. This opportunity is open now through Wednesday, December 4 – and students need simply to email FAN at fan@uoguelph.ca to arrange for submission. We will then review all the submission – members of the FAN student community, myself (Jakki) and potentially an art professor or two from the UoG – jury the art – and select which pieces to open our storefront with. From time to time we will place an additional call out for artwork – and keep the look fresh. Know a great UoG student artist? Help us pass along the news, and ask them to submit their piece for display consideration today.

Exam Delivery Service

Our popular Birthday Delivery service is a hit with students and parents alike. Many students send us messages of appreciation, while many parents relay similar messages from their students to us – how they enjoyed them, and what a surprise treat they were. That really brightens my day – to receive feedback from happy families we help to connect at a difficult time, when students are away from home on their birthday. We’ve delivered cupcakes from parents with personal messages from literally all over the world. Cupcake treats have reached students at Guelph who have travelled from every corner of Canada (just today we took a call from Fort Frances, ON) from British Columbia to Newfoundland, and as far as Mozambique, Bermuda, Australia, Venezuela and Dubai. We are happy to continue this service into the examination season and make deliveries during the first week of Exams – to students from their parents with messages of well wishes and encouragement. For three years now it has been our pleasure to motivate students with a cupcake treat, and we’re looking forward to the Exam Delivery day this season.

CBaSE Project

Looking ahead to the new Winter 2014 semester starting in January 2014, we will work directly with students of the College of Management and Economics (CME). We have enrolled a multi-step project in the Centre for Business and Social Entrepreneurship (CBaSE). As a Community Partner, we have the pleasure of creating a business project for 3-4 students to work on a practical and hands-on opportunity with Sweet Temptations Cupcakery. With the preliminary work being completed now, we are excited to work with the business leaders of tomorrow, through this great experiential learning program in the new year. We have a high school co-op student currently, Kyla (you  may have met her at the Guelph or Aberfoyle Farmers’ Markets, or you may have read her blog posts) and we can see first hand how valuable this form of real work experience is for students. Our partnership with CME will only strengthen our connection with the University of Guelph and further demonstrate our support for students.
